ADULT: Wingspan - 16 - 20mm. Black head with ring of yellow at the rear, two yellow stripes on the thorax and with 3 (female) or 4 (male) yellow rings around the black abdomen make this small species easily recognisable. The dark tipped clear wings confirm the identification. CHRYSALIS: In branches of foodplant. LARVA: In branches of foodplant. BEHAVIOUR: Day flying. Attracted to pheromone lures or seen sunning itself on chosen foodplant. HABITAT: Allotments or elsewhere where foodplant flourishes. FLIGHT PERIOD: Single brooded. May to June. STATUS: Uncommon but widely distributed. |
